Yukon Resident Hunters
Kluane Airways has operated in the Finlayson Lake area since 1987 and serviced resident hunters for many years prior to that date. Our working area reaches north of Faro to the Laforce Lakes area, roughly 90 miles north of our base and south to just north of Watson Lake and east to the Yukon / NWT border. Starting in the summer of 2024 Kluane Airways will now operate two DHC-2 Beavers.
On many of the lakes in our working area we have 12 - 14 foot aluminum boats that our clients are welcome to use at no charge. Most of these boats are short shaft boats, but inquire about the lake you are thinking about visiting as we do have a few long shafts as well. Just bring your own outboard and you are set for a great hunting adventure.
Most the lakes in our working area are spots that no hunting outfitter would move clients to, so unless someone flies in with another charter operator which does not happen often, you would hopefully see no one. We have a policy of not moving more than one group of hunters to any lake in our area in any particular year. We will never move another resident hunter or outfitter hunter to a lake that you may choose for your hunt. On any of the lakes that we fly hunters into, there is a strict limit of two Moose. Over the past ten years the populations have been impacted by th wolves, so we do not want to see any areas over harvested.
We always give return hunting groups the first option of going into the spot they have hunted the year before, so talk to us early, before Feb 1 if you wish to go back to that special location.
There were quite a number of good hunting locations in our working area that had zero hunters in them. There are still lots of great areas to hunt, just chat with us about your game requests. With draw areas now being a concern, there are still lots of lakes you can go into that are outside of the draw zones. If you are thinking about a Moose, Caribou, Grizzly or Sheep, give us a call.
Note: No matter how many hunters are in your group, never bring out more than two Moose. Conserve the populations, the Wolves have been hard on them..
We operate two Dehavilland Beavers from our main base of operations is Finlayson Lake, but often we will move hunters from Ross River or Faro. On most of the lakes in our area you can plan on a payload of about 1,200 - 1,400 lbs in the Beaver, plus our pilot and fuel. If you wish to haul in a canoe, then bring it along. The Beaver is by far the best aricraft to move you and your gear because of its large cabin ans short lake ability.
Garbage: Anythjing you haul into the bush, please haul out. Do not leave anything behind. Do not bury garbage as bears will did it up. If you see garbage or old fuel drums on any lake you visit, bring it or them to your camp and we will backhaul it out. Remove meat hanging apparatus's when you depart. Keep the Yukon clean.
Johnson Lake at Faro is a bit shorter than one likes and often has ugly winds and dowdrafts so we normally move no more than 1200 lbs off the lake.
